The summer concert series will kick off on June 11 in Chicago and will wrap up August 18 at Jones Beach, NY. The tour has 29 stops along its journey, all of which won’t let down fans. If you’re looking for some advance ticket sales, check out Music Today. (That will go on until March 26 at midnight.)

This announcement of their summer tour also comes with a secondary announcement. They will now have their own 3D movie, called Phish 3D. The movie will consist of footage shot during Phish’s Festival 8, a 3 day festival that happened over this past Halloween and covered numerous Rolling Stones songs. It will be released some time this April. Visit the website to sign up for more information as it becomes available.

Well, I’d say Phish fans are certainly getting their jollies this month. Now, let’s see how fast those tickets sell out!

UPDATE 3/25/10: An official trailer for Phish 3D has just been released. Check it:

Instead of dutifully watching the Oscars like a good little patron of the movie business, I went out to a concert and enjoyed music last night. In a previous blog post, Mike Gordon on Solo Tour, I had mentioned that Mike Gordon (of the band Phish) has been on an eight show tour in between his gigs with his more famous band. Last  night, the tour brought him to my town.

The venue he booked, the Sherman Theater, is not by any means a large venue. When I heard that Gordon had sold out his last show in Troy, NY, I was worried about the crowds I might find in my small theater. To my surprise, there were very few people in attendance at this show. The amount didn’t even fill the front section of the pit. Be that as it may, Gordon did not hold back on the audience. He gave them a show for the books.

He and his musicians took the stage, as Gordon made a comment about my town being “a ghost town with a really good vibe.” He plowed his way through a number of great songs with good jams, and even threw in a little piece of ‘Meat’ for the Phish fans in the crowd. He was joined by his opening act, Danny Barnes, who played a mean banjo on a few of the songs. Barnes has opened for other jam bands as well, including Keller Williams.

Here’s the whole kit and caboodle:

Set I: Only a Dream, Can’t Stand Still, Pretend > Can’t Stand Still > Pretend, 15 Step > Midnight, Where the Soul of Man Never Dies, Middle of the Road, Cruel World, Soul Food Man

Set II: Dig Further Down, Hap Nappy, She Said She Said, Crumblin’ Bones > Morphin’ Again, Another Door

E: Country Boy

Besides the music, the band had a lot of fun visual aspects to its show. There were bubble machines set up on both sides of the stage, crazy lights, and a stage set up as a tribute to the upcoming spring season — butterflies, lights, and pussy willows covered its surface. The best parts were the darting green and red point lights that cut through the audience and filled the venue.

Overall, a good show. I have to say that if you go to a Mike Gordon show expecting to hear Phish songs you will be let down. He does play his own music with his own band and rarely throws in Phish. But if you’re just looking to listen to some good jams, than it’s for you.

I did manage to get a video of ‘Meat,’ but be warned — the sound quality is pretty awful. I was standing too close to the speakers. Still, if you want to check it out, click here.

To start off the month of March, I thought we might begin with a celebration (or two)! Two of music’s great influences are soon to be 70 years old – Phil Lesh, bassist with the Grateful Dead, and Herbie Hancock, who needs no introduction.

Hancock’s birthday bash has been given the title ‘Herbie Hancock, Seven Decades: The Birthday Celebration.’ Even though the star will be turning 70 on April 12, the concert will run on September 1 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA. The Associated Press says that Hancock will be joined by comedian Bill Cosby, saxophonist Joe Lovano, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Hancock’s bandmate in Miles Davis’ famed 1960s quintet.

Of course, that isn’t the full line-up just yet. More acts will be announced as the date gets closer. And the best part about all this is that all the money made from the concert will benefit The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. Gotta love a good cause.

Our second 70th birthday boy is Phil Lesh, who will also be having a special concert to celebrate. Lesh’s birthday bash is a bit sooner, kicking off on March 12 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Fransisco, CA. Lesh’s new band, Furthur, will play, along with some of the musicians from his other band, Phil Lesh & Friends.

Like Hancock’s bash, this celebration will benefit a good cause. It will help support the Unbroken Chain Foundation, which is a huge part of the Haiti earthquake relief efforts. Charityfolks.com is having a bidding auction for a VIP ticket to the show, a t-shirt for the event, a signed poster, and a meet and greet with Phil. If you win the auction, you get to help him build a float and then ride on it with him! (Oh, the things rich people will do with their money.)

Nonetheless, I’d like to wish these two birthday boys a good one! It’s great that they use their birthdays to support good causes.
